Question: How to fix a leaking shower? (without a plumber)?
When we turn our shower on water squirts out from the main box on the wall. My dad use to do the DIY in our house but he last year he died. Me and my mum have no clue and cant afford a plumber.

Does anyone what the problem is and if its an easy job?

if its squirting from the box,for gods sake don’t use it??? the wires are behind the box,and you could bloody fry yourself. leave the shower till you can afford a competent plumber to sort it.

Question: This is not a question as one would expect . A plumber up north can do 6 calls a day in London 1-2?
This is the difference why charges are so much different. I have worked in London and he surouning counties and I like the up north situation. Tonight I answered a question on “Plumber hassels” ( M & R) The reciprident had evidentally as so many do thought they would save money by doing some of the work themselves.So many times we are, as heating engineers, are called to get the house holder out of the sh1t . DIY destroy it yourself…..
Buy it on saturday. .F.. it on Sunday …. get a plumber on Monday.
Tonight is a good night ( Friday ) yes pet I’ll fix that squeeking floorboard (this is 11.45 PM just come in from pub ) picks up hammer and nails. Question why is the floorboard loose must have been up? Darling can you find the stop tap. Darling now. Any time as soon as you can. AND SO ON . This is just one of he commen type of calls. It might supprise some just how many hours we work doing estimates and non chargable calls. An OAP customer 25 yrs+ tap washer HOW Much ?

Tell me about it. I got so sick of it i went onto sites, lots less hassle though the wages are lower, i know what I’m getting every week, i don’t have to put up with fools begging for help because they’ve messed up, then have them complain when given the bill.

Question: Hello i’m not DIY , but is it easy to fit a toilet bowl or will i need a plumber?

It’s not complicated, as long as the pipework is the same as your old one. Sometimes they have different levels where the waste pipe at the back fits, not to mention the height and position of the cistern outlets and inlet. Check these are all in the right place, then it’s just a question of unscrewing the old one from the floor and pushing the new one into the same position. Get some sealant to finish the job and prevent leaks from the waste pipe.

Question: Mid Life Career Change – Plumber?
I have a stable career , but im finding that its not going to give me long term prospects. Allways had an interest in DIY / Plumbing so im thinking of a long term goal of self employed plumber … anyone offer and advice as to training, qualifications etc?

Check with the local industry body or guild . there is bound to be a Plumbers association or Plumbers guild , something of that nature.

In Australia at the moment there are many govt schemes just for this purpose to try and make up for the skills shortage and so employers are getting g good training rebates and subsidized apprentice programs.

I just hope you dont find it too “draining”, that you end up “flushed ” with success, that you dont “sink’ to a new low …sorry i will just put a “plug” in it……….groan!
