I’m doing a DIY project of laying vinyl flooring in a bathroom over existing vinyl. Is it advisable?

Question: I’m doing a DIY project of laying vinyl flooring in a bathroom over existing vinyl. Is it advisable?

Answer:

Answer by JustMe
No, it’s not. This was done in our home and we are having to redo it, less than a year afterwards. Where the vinyl chipped through it is showing the other pattern, which ruins the effect. Also parts of it are coming up. This is MUCH more difficult to deal with later than it would have been to just do it correctly in the first place – rip up the old and replace.

Good luck! (:

How do you build a sub floor for a tack room in a barn over dirt?

Question: How do you build a sub floor for a tack room in a barn over dirt?
I would like to add a tack room in my barn in a 12×12 area. However the ground is just dirt so I am wondering if the moisture from the dirt will ruin the sub floor at some point. Should I put crushed gravel over the dirt before the sub floor or use concrete? Any ideas would be helpful keeping in mind my limited budget which is why Im going to take on a DIY project in the first place lol. Thanks!

Ideally you should excavate the dirt to a depth of 8″ and back fill with 4″ of compacted crushed stone lay a vapour barrier over this and some rebars and then pour 4″ of concrete for a floor this size 1.78 cu yards would be needed at an average of $ 75 per cubic yard +delivery and the stone averages at $ 12 per cubic yard the prices will vary according to where you live.Ideally this would be a job for 2 people, ringing around and getting prices from local concrete depots should give you a better idea of how much materials would cost,as for ‘building’ the sub floor the concrete would need to be laid inside a form that would be the same dimension as your floor so dig out your earth that bit bigger so as to fit the form in at 12×12 and then screed the concrete using the top of the forms as a guide for levelling and float it then to achieve a smooth finish .Also check on line for videos as there are many that show you how to do this ok,like you-tube or the sites below

My family is diy doing our kitchen. We live in an over 100 year old house and as expected, the sub floor is…?

Question: My family is diy doing our kitchen. We live in an over 100 year old house and as expected, the sub floor is…?
…holey to say the least. we are laying another sub floor over it but there is an issue. at one point in the floor, there is a 3/4 in difference to make it level. We would pour self leveling compound but there are holes in the original sub floor so we can’t, what should we do?
The reason we are doing this ourselves is because we can’t afford to hire someone to do it

Answer:

Hire a professional to level the floor.

I need some good ideas (other than build an extension on it), good curb appeal, cheap to build – potentially DIY. House is cottage style with natural timber siding, and the garage is an unsightly square box glued next to it…
