Question: Where can I find metal saddles for attaching patio roof rafters to existing roof?
The bracket or “saddle” I’m looking for is in an article from a DIY soft-cover book – pg 74 – Building Techniques – the title at the top of pg 74 is, “Building – from foundation to rafters”. I only have a copy of page 74 and don’t have the whole publication.

How can I get rid of the moss growing on my roof tiles? Is this a DIY or professional job?

Question: How can I get rid of the moss growing on my roof tiles? Is this a DIY or professional job?
We need to clean up the roof of moss. The recent builders nearly killed themselves sliding down the moss when it rained. I am not sure which professionals to ask, or, as it is a dormer bungalow, is this a job we can tackle ourselves, and is so, how?

Answer:

Answer by krn001
I suggest a professional do the cleaning, all it takes is 1 slip & moss gets quite slippery.

DIY home solar panels?

Question: DIY home solar panels?
I would love to put in solar panels on my roof, but how hard would it be, and how expensive? Would I be able to do the work myself, or would I have to hire a pro?
Also I live in Oregon, so much of the time it is overcast, so would it really be worth it?

Answer:

Answer by rhsaunders
Not worth it unless you can get a fat subsidy. But Congress is working on a bill to provide a significant subsidy, and Oregon may have one as well. A solar plant costs about $ 10 per watt of installed capacity, and can produce a maximum of two kWh per watt per year — which is worth about two bits. Without a subsidy, you are better off leaving your money in a savings account.

underfloor heating system with a rocket mass heater

underfloor heating system with a rocket mass heater

www.permies.com Erica Wisner shows us some of the latest innovation with rocket mass heaters. This time there are two innovations. One is sub floor heating. The heat of the rocket mass heater exhaust is routed under the floor and then outside. The other is heat bypass valve – the heat is the routed directly outside, bypassing the underfloor heating. The cool thing about this design is that you run one small, hot fire, and it gives off heat for days. And there is no bulk in the building. And this isn’t nearly as expensive as other underfloor heating systems. Erica talks a little about sub floor vs. in-floor heating systems. An earthen floor in a shed is dug out and replaced with a wood floor. Question: advice on buying adjustable spanner set?
I am doing more and more DIY at home and have been using adjustable wrenches I purchased as a set for £8. They seem to slip\move from the setting I set and I have to keep adjusting them every 3/4 turns… really annoying.

Can anyone recommend a decent set of plumbing wrenches\spanners that I can buy. Price is an issue for me. When I go the shops… I do see some quality spanners and they’re £10-20 each.
